It was in 2023 that the First China-Central Asia Summit was held in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province in China, in which the five Central Asian countries of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan made a major cooperative effort to strengthen their relationship with China.
This Summit represented the establishment of an important mechanism for cooperation between China and the Central Asian countries. To achieve this, the Xi'an Declaration was signed, in which the Heads of State agreed to formally establish a framework for cooperation based on four principles to create a community of shared future China-Central Asia.
Among the principles outlined are, "mutual assistance, common development, universal security and eternal friendship."[1]
It is important to note that since the signing of this Declaration, several projects such as the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway have been carried out in the context of cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
Thus, this First Summit strengthened cooperation between China and Central Asian countries, promoting peace and stability in the region.
On the other hand, the Second China-Central Asia Summit will be held on June 16-18, 2025, in Astana, Kazakhstan, whose objectives will focus on strengthening cooperation between the countries of the region and China as well as exchanging ideas on certain issues, in addition to unveiling a high-level project or plan for relations between China and the countries of Central Asia.
Thus, the Second China-Central Asia Summit will allow for an important diplomatic dialogue to promote cooperation between China and the Central Asian region, especially on economic development issues, among others.
